Tips to boost your mental health

Your general psychological well-being is referred to as your "mental health." It entails your perception of yourself, the caliber of your connections, and your capacity for emotion regulation and problem-solving. Anybody can have mental or emotional health issues, and many of us will throughout our lifetimes. One in five Canadians struggles with their mental health or drug usage.

These suggestions can improve your disposition, make you more resilient, and help you live more fully.

Talk to a trusted person.

It can be beneficial to talk to a trusted person, such as a friend, family member, or work colleague. If you are able to freely discuss what you are going through with someone who cares about you, you could feel better. You can use a video call, phone call, or messaging app to stay in touch with your loved ones if you live in a place where face-to-face encounters are few.

Take care of your physical well-being.

Maintaining good physical health also enhances your mental health and general wellbeing. Be active for at least 30 minutes every day, whether that be through cycling, gardening, yoga, dancing, running, or any other form of exercise. Consume a nutritious, balanced diet. Don't forget to get enough rest.

Engage in activities you enjoy

Try to keep doing the things that make you happy and fulfilled, including making meals for yourself or your loved ones, playing with your pet, going for walks in the park, reading a book, or watching a movie or TV show. You can maintain good mental health by following a regular schedule that includes enjoyable activities.

Keep dangerous substances at a distance.

Avoid using dangerous substances like kava, alcohol, narcotics, or smoke to deal with your emotions. Even while they can appear to make you feel better right away, these things can really make you feel worse over time. These harmful substances increase your risk of getting sick or hurt, as well as the risk to people around you.

Avoid sacrificing sleep.

More so than you might imagine. The best way for our bodies and minds to regenerate is through sleep. Take a break from screen stimulation in the hours before night to improve your quality of sleep. This includes time spent on TV, phones, tablets, and laptops. Instead, think of reading or calming music.

Consume brain-healthy foods to promote good mental health

Fatty fish high in omega-3s, nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, and peanuts), avocados, beans, leafy greens (spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts), and fresh fruit, such as blueberries, are foods that help enhance your mood.

Consult a professional

Call your local mental health helpline, speak with your counselor, or contact your doctor if you believe you are unable to handle the stress you are experiencing. Keep in mind that you are not alone and that you have options for promoting your mental health.
